ECITB’s Engineering qualifications are based on the National Occupational Standards (NOS) of a particular sector of industry. NOS are developed by employers and professional bodies in conjunction with the Standard Setting Body and describe what is meant by occupational competence within a particular job role.

By working with industry, ECITB engineering qualifications are valued by employers because they offer development opportunities to staff across a wide range of engineering construction roles.
Our qualifications enable learners to demonstrate the specific skills, knowledge and behaviours needed to perform a particular role as set out by the National Occupational Standards (NOS).
To complete an ECITB qualification, learners need to prove they can do certain work-related tasks. Learners are assessed by a variety of different assessment methods which offers them flexibility in how they achieve their qualification. We are delighted to announce we now also cover Ireland.

Our qualifications are suitable for learners who already have skills and want to improve them, and also for those who are just starting out in their chosen career, for example Apprentices.

As an awarding body, SQA develops, maintains, and improves a framework of qualifications. These can be gained at Scotland’s schools, colleges, employers and training providers.

They include:

  • National Qualifications. These are studied at school and college, and include National 1–5, Highers, and Advanced Highers.
  • Higher National Qualifications. These are often studied at college. They are made up of units which are qualifications in their own right. They can act  as a bridge to study at university, and are currently being redesigned under the ‘Next Gen’ project.
  • A range of vocational qualifications, developed with industry partners, and responding to perceived skills needs.
